[Poem 16/27: PURE MAGIC]
Read by Nathan in Austria
Translated by Maria, his Mum
Nathan stepped up to the plate and read, so beautifully, this little snippety piece. His parents are a dream. They’re inspiring and liberal and huge-hearted and real. I need these people in my life.
16/27: PURE MAGIC is self-explanatory, I think. I guess if you’re not a German-speaker, then maybe not. Written during the honeymoon phase of my months in India.

[Poem 15/27: PLANTS GROWING, BABIES SMILING]
Read by Siri in Australia
I used to photograph Siri everywhere, all the time. I was 17 and she was 14 and we drove into the wild Australian bushland every other day, and by the edges of cliffs and hiked to glow worm caves in inappropriate footwear and, with her on the other side of my lens, I learned to understand humans and how they move and how they breathe and hold themselves. She’s very important to me and my creative growth and will always be.
15/27: PLANTS GROWING, BABIES SMILING is a good indicator of how my writing has changed over time. This is one of the oldest ones- it reads choppy and strange but is still important to me and important for this book- so I’ve included it, to immortalise a part of me I left behind on this journey.

[Poem 14/27: PARIS, UNDONE]
Read by Bentley in California
Bentley began as one of my best friend’s (Hayley’s) husbands, but has since become one of my favourite friends I’ve ever had, too. He has a heart of gold and is sensitive, thoughtful, kind, loving, and hilarious. I treasure the time we’ve spent together in different parts of the world and am so, so happy for couples that inspire and motivate me. Love ya, Bentley. So much.
14/27: PARIS, UNDONE was written as I sat in my bed in Paris when I was there to do an intensive French course- but I had food poisoning and a fever and lost my phone and had a truly miserable time most of the month I was there instead. I’d finally mustered up the energy to leave my bed for an afternoon at a flea market and it certainly wasn’t worth it.

[Poem 13/27: LITTLE ME, LITTLE YOU]
Read by Tabitha in Queensland, Australia
My most darling of darling cousins, Tabitha. She’s the eldest of our cousin generation besides my sister and I’ve looked up to her forever- for her creativity, her genuine zest for life and her glowing, glowing countenance. She’s everything I’ve ever wanted to be. She’s compassionate and loving and selfless and kind and hilarious and FUN. And an angel! And insightful and intelligent as heck.
12/27: LITTLE ME, LITTLE YOU is based on some words I received from on high. It’s grounded in my beliefs and glittered with gospel. It shares the tiniest insight into the eternal pathway we’re all on- which didn’t start when we were born nor will it end when we take our last breath.

[Poem 12/27: LITTLE BRIGHT-EYED LADY, WHO ARE YOU?]
Read by Bayley in Utah
Ahh Bayley! You know those people you’ve known from only a handful of occasions, but know that if given the opportunity with ample time and proximity, you’d be the closest of all close friends? That’s Bayley for me. She’s intelligent and inquisitive and creative and sees through multi-faceted eyes and understandings and I actually adore her so much. Can’t wait until we’re given the time together to become BFFs forever.
12/27: LITTLE BRIGHT-EYED LADY, WHO ARE YOU? is a piece I wrote flicking through photos I’d taken in Nepal. One little girl I met in a tiny little village in the middle of nowhere will always stand out to me. She was 100-years wise inside her 10-year old eyes and her name was Swastika and we couldn’t communicate in any mutual language but the language of our spirits. She changed me.

[Poem 11/27: IN A HOME ON THE EDGE]
Read by Carolin in New Delhi
Never knew there was someone who was pretty much ME, living her very own life, but in the heart of New Delhi, until I met Carolin. She picked me up from the airport and bargained her way into a taxi for us both and that was the start of a blissful week or two together- realising how similar we were and always have been.
11/27: IN A HOME ON THE EDGE is the oldest poem in the book- penned close to 10 years ago. It’s exciting to me to read these days, because it’s not too far from the truth I live now and isn’t it lovely how words can connect time periods and people? Carl Sagan put it perfectly when describing books- ‘Books break the shackles of time.’ Amazing.

[Poem 10/27: IF SHARING IS CARING]
Read by Nascha in Berlin.. but she’s Finnish!
Oh, Nascha. May have shared more tears with her than anyone else, ever. We feel in the exact same way and that is something I really, truly treasure. She’s a soul friend that I’ll keep for this life and the next one- I know it, I’m sure of it.
10/27: IF SHARING IS CARING stemmed from a time when I still had so much left to share with someone who hurt me so much after things had come to an end.

[Poem 9/27: I OPENED MY HAND/JAG ÖPPNADE MIN HAND]
Read by Lotta in Stockholm
The first time I met Lotta, she came into the kitchen wearing a navy blue pantsuit, laughing at something or rather. It still seems to sum her up. She’s inquisitive and fun and thoughtful and real and loves wholly without reservation. Her family were the only Swedes I met for a full year and a half of living in Germany and they’ll always be special to me for that and what we’ve shared since then, too.
9/27: JAG ÖPPNADE MIN HAND breaks my heart too much in English to read too often but adds an element of beautiful in Swedish, which is why I chose to go with that instead. How strange the change from major to minor.
Message me if you’d like the translation- or wait until your book arrives, where it’s written in both languages.
